When we talk about espadrilles, it goes without saying that they are the star shoe of the summer. Not only are they a Spanish national reference, but they have also become a highly valued and traditional product beyond our borders. Without a doubt, the best espadrille artisans are in Spain. Companies with a long family tradition that, season after season, reinvent this classic shoe to bring it up to date with the trends of each summer.
Before we move on to our top 5 espadrilles for this spring-summer 2021 season, we would like to tell you some curious facts about this iconic shoe. It is said that espadrilles have their origins in the Egyptian sandal, which later inspired the Romans. In Europe they are known to have existed since at least 1322, when some documents in Catalan were discovered, they where called espardeñas. It is clear that raffia and cork were already being used in Spain to make flat shoes, but they were also used in America before any contact with Europe. It was not until the 1970s that the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent completely reinvented the classic flat raffia espadrille and turned it into a wedge, modernising the centuries-old shoe and creating the most wanted shoe of the summer season.
