Top 5 must-have espadrilles

When we talk about espadrilles, it goes without saying that they are the star shoe of the summer. Not only are they a Spanish national reference, but they have also become a highly valued and traditional product beyond our borders. Without a doubt, the best espadrille artisans are in Spain. Companies with a long family tradition that, season after season, reinvent this classic shoe to bring it up to date with the trends of each summer.

Before we move on to our top 5 espadrilles for this spring-summer 2021 season, we would like to tell you some curious facts about this iconic shoe.

It is said that espadrilles have their origins in the Egyptian sandal, which later inspired the Romans. In Europe they are known to have existed since at least 1322, when some documents in Catalan were discovered, they where called espardeñas. It is clear that raffia and cork were already being used in Spain to make flat shoes, but they were also used in America before any contact with Europe.
It was not until the 1970s that the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent completely reinvented the classic flat raffia espadrille and turned it into a wedge, modernising the centuries-old shoe and creating the most wanted shoe of the summer season.

1. Raffia heel wedge

Created in the 70s, the esparto wedge is here to stay. Comfortable, versatile and easy to combine. We recommend you to go for a pair in nude or make-up tones to be able to combine them with all your summer outfits. Discover our Nerja model, an 8cm suede wedge. If you prefer a lower wedge, you will definitely love our Altea espadrille. Do you like to go with the latest fashion trends? You can't miss our Valencia wedge, with a combination of materials such as suede and natural linen.

2. Flat espadrilles or "espardeñas"

A timeless model that returns season after season. At miMaO we have made it with the best quality suede leather, a soft and breathable leather, a natural jute sole and the best comfort technology so that you can wear our Espadrille flat shoe for hours.

3. Mule

This centenary shoe has been reinvented and changed to the different times and trends of each decade. Nowadays we have all kinds of espadrilles, but a new design that is being repeated in recent seasons has been the clog or mule. Our Zenia espadrille perfectly combines the classic raffia wedge with a modern mule style, open at the front and adjustable at the heel.

4. Sandal

For all those passionate about sandals and wedges for summer, open-toed espadrilles are the best option to combine both styles. If you are into comfortable wedges for everyday looks, we recommend our Calpe sandal, with a 6cm heel and comfortable cross straps at the front. If you're a high heel lover, you'll love our Palma sandal espadrilles.

5. Flatform

Calling all daring fashionistas of this season. Do you want to incorporate an espadrille style to your wardrobe this summer, but you want a more daring, youthful and daring design? Our Jute espadrille will combine with all your outfits. It is a flip-flop style designed with two buckles on the upper. It's a design that has been in fashion for a couple of seasons and it's coming on strong this 2021.
